Appearance

Natural stone exudes luxury and elegance, so if you are attempting to create a finish of the very highest quality, you are certainly on the right lines with stone tiles. Furthermore, no two stone tiles and therefore floors will ever look exactly the same as each piece of stone used will be completely unique, so you can be assured that you have a floor that no-one else in the world has in their home!

Due to their beauty and intricacy, the use of natural stone wall or floor tiles will add a touch of class to any setting purely down to their stunning 'feel'.

Modern sealers are liquids and so wipe on very very easily.

Fitting

There are several golden rules involved with fitting stone, to save you time and money keep these in mind.

If the stone is a light\beige colour you MUST use a white adhesive. Grey or other colour adhesives can bleed their colour through to the surface of the tile, often months after fixing; once this happens nothing can be done.
When cutting, NEVER EVER mark the tiles with a marker pen, even on the back of the tile. The ink will slowly bleed through, giving you a nice graffiti effect in a few months time. Not exactly the talking point you were aiming for....
To keep costs down, choose a quality stone. Cheap stone is a classic false economy case; poor quality stone is often more filler\holes than stone, not only will this look bad, but filling the holes with adhesive is expensive.
Mix the stone prior to use, this ensures a natural blend that isn't dependant on the packing order.
Sort chipped or tiles with features you don't like before fitting, then use them for cuts.

Durability

Natural stone tiles are incredibly durable. This is showcased by the length of time stone has been used in construction and interior design, and when it comes to stone tiles, they are renowned for being hard wearing and are likely to last a lifetime after installation. Often natural stone can be used externally and is often used for a luxurious patio or sun area.

Instead of going for a traditional bathroom set-up, why not consider something a little different and very modern in the form of a wet room?

To help you work out whether a wet room would be the right choice in your home, read on as we at Trade Price Tiles answer some of the questions that may be floating around your head as you ponder your options;

What is a Wet Room?

The first question you may be asking yourself is what exactly a wet room is as you may have seen them on the TV previously but never quite understood what one is. In essence, a wet room is an open, waterproofed area that can be as small or spacious as you desire. They usually have an open plan shower with no tray, a toilet and basin, and sometimes a bath. Unlike normal bathrooms there are no enclosures and the space is usually open plan.

Why Choose a Wet Room?

If you are looking to add a touch of luxurious style to your property, you won’t go far wrong with a wet room. Wet rooms are also attractive to those with disabilties or those that are unwilling or unable to use a bath which can be a great attraction to potential buyers of your home. The high end design of these rooms can add to the potential re-sale value of your property as buyers associate this stylish type of room with the top end hotels on the market!

In a wetroom, you have the freedom to choose a larger tile, and this adds the advantage that less grout makes for easier cleaning. For the floor stay away from highly polished tiles and choose something with a small amount of texture to add an element of slip resistance.

How Do I Create a Wet Room?

The most important thing when designing a wet room is ensuring the space is waterproof, therefore tiles are the best choice for both the walls and floors, however one thing that lots of sites won't tell you is that its very important to waterproof the area BEFORE you tile. The reason for this a common misunderstanding; waterproof grout doesn't actually stop water passing through it! it just doesn't fall apart when it gets wet. This is a fact that lots of people aren't aware of, and its the same for EVERY brand.

The simple fact is that grout isn't supposed to stop water ingress, its up to you to make sure that the substrate is right for a wetroom. This means that any surface that falls apart when it gets damp is out; plasterboard and chipboard are a great way to achieve leaks and failures. You're wetroom walls should be either render or ideally backerboards such as no more ply, or if they are already plastered use a tile tanking product to fully waterproof them. Floors should be concrete or overboarded with no more ply.

The next thing to tackle is your shower tray, or rather the lack of one! kits like the Kascade wetroom system allow you to fit a preformed 'tray' which you embed into your floor, then tile over the top of. Using this system means that the correct angles are applied to allow water to drain properly and tiling becomes very easy.

Follow these tips and you'll have a long lasting wetroom thats easy to clean (just mop\hose it!) and really adds a stunning feature to your home.

On completing a home improvement project, you obviously hope to achieve a major upgrade of the overall appearance. In general tiled areas look expensive and sophisticated but porcelain tiles, in general have a look and feel that sets them apart. Whats more, as they are the hardest type of tile available they will maintain this appearance for years and years. Porcelain tiles come in a wide variety of different designs and are often available in much larger sizes than ceramics, they are ideally suited to any area; kitchens and bathrooms through to conservatories and outdoor areas.

Porcelain tiles are ideally suited for use as a flooring where the benifits of their hard wearing nature can be taken advantage of, but they do also offer you the chance to use the same tile on your walls to keep the whole area matched. Long Lasting

Everyone wants features within their homes that are going to last, tiles made of porcelain exceed every expectation in this area. Porcelain tiles are generally made using a fine porcelain dust which is mechanically compressed using huge forces and then fired at high temperature to form a tile, this process results in a tile that has a very high density and scratch resistance, meaning they are far less likely to crack, chip or fade, in fact if properly laid you can literally park your car on them without concern. All of this means that you dont need to worry about your new tiles wearing out anytime soon, in fact most porcelain floors will easily last a lifetime.

The manufacturing process described above also has another positive side effect; the resulting tiles are very low porosity compared with most ceramic tiles. This means that most porcelain tiles are frostproof. A frostproof tile can be used externally as a patio tile or wall cladding, allowing you to create a seamless transition from internal to external design.

Easy to Maintain

We all love things that don’t take a great deal of looking after; you will be pleased to know that porcelain tiles come to the fore in this category too! Thanks to their low moisture absorbency rate, liquids spilt on the tiles can be wiped away very easily without the risk of them leaving a stain*. Regular cleaning needs nothing more than an occasional mop (ideally using lithofin easycare). It is perhaps for this reason that porcelain tiles that imitate wooden, stone, marble, travertine or slate tiles are becoming so popular, they look as good (if not better) than the real thing, they don't degrade over time and need very little maintenance when compared to the real thing.

There are a number of problems commonly associated with cheap, low quality tiles, including the following;

• Poor quality control at the manufacturer can result in shade, thickness or width variations

• They can be brittle, making them difficult to cut and ensure a neat and tidy finish - This is especially true of cheap porcelain.

• They can wear relatively quickly leading to poor appearance in a relatively shorter space of time.

Tiling on chipboard floor - all you need to know

Following our previous blog post tiling a wooden floor - yes you can! we have been asked several times if it's possible to tile directly onto chipboard flooring. To give a definitive answer about tiling directly onto chipboard or floor boards (tongue and groove) we felt another post was needed.

Can you tile onto chipboard? - the short answer.

Yes - sometimes...

IF your floor is very well screwed down and has little deflection (we recommend the two fat men test*) then some modern adhesives such as granfix ultimateflex can be used.

BUT You have to be honest with yourself about the current state of the substrate, the deflection and stability of the floor. Small bathrooms often suffer less with deflection due to the shorter span.

Chipboard flooring - the problems.

1. Chipboard flooring flexes quite a lot, and often isn't screwed down well, both of these things cause movement and movement is your enemy. The worst kind of movement is deflection; this is where the boards bend down in between the joists, or the joists themselves flex when you walk on them, this is often the reason for cracked tiles.

2. Water damages chipboard, once chipboard gets wet it swells and falls apart, which will lift your tiles. Newer 'green' chipboard is used to help with this but still isn't perfect.

Tiling Chipboard - Solutions

There's nothing at all you can do about chipboards hatred of water, for this reason dont use chip in a wet room or any constantly wet area. However the odd splash from a shower or bath isnt going to hurt.

To combat movement, screw the boards down every 150mm along each joist, taking care not to puncture pipes or electrics - this will stop the boards moving and help with board (but not joist) deflection. If your floor passes the two fat men test* proceed as follows:

Abrade\Sand the floor to remove wax, dirt etc - especially with green chipboard.
Seal the floor using Granfix acrylic bonding agent and allow it to dry.
Fix your tiles using Granfix Ultimateflex adhesive.
Grout with Granfix maxigrout flexible in your choice of colour.

It's as simple as it sounds, ask a couple of friends to stand in middle of the floor and bounce up and down, if the floor moves up and down lots (try placing a glass of water on the floor so you can see) then that deflection will cause your tiles to crack.
